What is shell plaster

The look of granite on your facade

Shell plaster is made from high-strength acrylic resin and ceramic-based flakes. Because it carries the main colours of granite and marble, it makes a facade look as if a single slab of granite had been cut and fixed to it.

The flake structure covers cracks, and its flexibility helps it withstand deformation caused by movement in the building. It is waterproof and stands up to sun, damp and wind. Its colour does not fade and it shows no joins. Being vapour-permeable, it lets moisture in the wall escape.

As it is washable, it is also used decoratively in stairwells and interiors.

Application

Preparation and application

  1. 01

    Prepare the surface

Repair any damaged areas of the wall. Then apply the shell plaster primer supplied with the set and let it dry.

  2. 02

    Mix

Pour 15 litres of clean water into a large plastic tub and add the thickening powder. Pour in the flakes and wet them thoroughly, then add the adhesive and mix until you have a smooth, lump-free mortar.

  3. 03

    Apply

Apply the mortar to the surface with a steel trowel. If it starts to sag in places, smooth it again with the trowel so that it adheres to the wall.

  4. 04

    Protect (optional)

Once dry, you can apply a protective coat with a brush or roller. This gives a glossier finish and a surface that does not hold water.

Application notes

To avoid breaking the ceramic flakes, a mixing drill is not recommended; if you have to use one, keep it at a very low speed. Use the prepared mortar straight away. Do not apply when the air temperature is below 5 °C.

Once dry, a surface that gets wet may turn milky for a while. It soon returns to its original colour, and after a time this no longer happens.

About shell plaster
