Silk plaster or cotton plaster? The differences and how to choose

When you shop for a textured wall coating, you will come across silk plaster, liquid wallpaper and cotton plaster. The names sound alike, but the ingredients are quite different.

Comparison · 5 min read

In short

Silk plaster and liquid wallpaper are general names that different manufacturers use for textured wall coatings, and what they contain varies from brand to brand. DEPKA cotton plaster, by contrast, is made only from cotton, natural adhesive and decorative natural stone. It is not silk plaster, and it contains no polystyrene or synthetic fillers.

DEPKA is not a silk plaster brand and does not sell silk plaster. What it does offer is the warm, textured, seamless look that people searching for these coatings want, made with natural ingredients.

Ingredients, application and repairs

When choosing a textured coating, first check the label for the fibre type, binder and filler. DEPKA's ingredients are simple: cotton, a natural binder and decorative natural stone.

It comes ready in the pack: mix 1 kg with 4 litres of lukewarm water, apply it with the transparent Depka trowel and let it dry for 12–24 hours. If an area gets knocked, dampen it and smooth it with the trowel; the colour does not fade, so the repair does not show.

Insulation and durability

The cotton fibre structure helps absorb sound and contributes to thermal insulation, with up to 40% energy savings on heating and cooling. Thanks to its flexible structure it does not crack, and it hides minor flaws in the wall. DEPKA has been fire-tested at the TSE laboratory to TS EN 13501-1 and TS EN ISO 11925-2.

Cost

DEPKA cotton plaster costs 1,600 TL per 2 kg pack, with free shipping within Türkiye. This is the Türkiye price; for export orders, please contact us. As 1 kg covers 3.5–4 m², the material cost works out at roughly 200–230 TL per m². And because you do not need extra layers such as paint, primer or gypsum, the overall cost is lower.
